Here's an excerpt from the Chicago Sun-Times on Sunday, 7.24.22.

“We’re all family here, and this is legendary,” said Maren Morris at one point. And most of the night felt that way, such as when Stapleton brought out his “hero” for a one-night-only appearance: frequent songwriting partner Mike Henderson, a quintessential part of the bluegrass band the SteelDrivers in which Stapleton got his start.

Their performance of “Midnight Train to Memphis” showed Stapleton at perhaps his most comfortable on vocals and guitar, still so tethered to his roots even as he has expanded into newer crossover territory in the past few years working with pop stars like Adele and Justin Timberlake.

Here's a small recap:

CMA Award for song of the year: Chris Stapleton and Mike Henderson won the first trophy of the night for “Broken Halos.” Stapleton said: “I didn’t expect this one. Man, thank you. So many great songs in that category. And I wrote this one with one of my dear friends and heroes, Mr. Mike Henderson,” Stapleton said. Hennderson thanked his wife, his family and his lucky stars for letting him live in Nashville where he said that all the cool stuff happens."

Here’s from The Boot:

Songwriters Chris Stapleton and Mike Henderson took home the trophy for Best Country Song, for "Broken Halos," at the 2018 Grammy Awards. Stapleton, who had won Best Country Solo Performance minutes before, called it "unbelievable" to win the award with his "good friend" Mike Henderson, his long-time bandmate in bluegrass band the SteelDrivers. “To win this with him means so, so much to me," Stapleton said from stage. Seemingly overcome with emotion at what the win signified, Stapleton mentioned the time the pair spent touring in a van and honing their songwriting skills. Once again, Stapleton reiterated that the award “means a great deal,” and sent out thanks.

‘Skyville Live’ Assembles Ace Guitarists Billy Gibbons, Orianthi, Frankie Ballard, Mike Henderson

There was an ax to grind at Skyville Live Tuesday night — many of them.

ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, country singer Frankie Ballard, famed rock guitarist Orianthi, soulful blues singer ZZ Ward and celebrated guitarist and songwriter Mike Henderson joined to turn the venue’s online music series into a guitarathon for the night.

Ballard, who gave Gibbons an amplifier emblazoned with the outline of Texas, said he had so much fun jamming during rehearsal that he’d already had a “great time.”

“Everything after rehearsal is a bonus,” Ballard said. “Billy is one of my guitar heroes. I owe him a lot. He was like the older brother you have on the radio introducing you to all the music he loved. Guys like that got me turned on to the blues … he’s always been a big inspiration.”

Gibbons kicked off the night with a set including songs from his debut solo album “Perfectamundo.” Short sets from Ward, Ballard, Henderson and Orianthi followed before the night’s players got back on stage to jam on a ZZ Top classic.

Before the show, Gibbons said he was looking forward to the performance but admitted he didn’t know what he was getting into when he agreed to play.

“The more I started digesting what had been assembled here, it started to sound really interesting,” Gibbons said. “The guys that are occupying the positions in (the backing band) are (really talented). I thought, ‘I’ve got the time off.’ I didn’t have a clue how professional this was. They have turned this thing into a living, breathing entity. It’s a good thing.”
Mike Hendersontag:www.mikehenderson.com,2005:Post/40547052016-02-22T18:02:00-06:002022-05-10T13:51:03-05:00Videos at the Ryman with Chris Stapleton
Check out 3 of the songs I had the pleasure of performing with Chris at his show at the Ryman. They were a great team.” The guys spent those evenings building up a catalog of murder ballads and bluegrass-influenced tunes.

Posted by Craig Havighurst
Nashville veteran Mike Henderson shocked everyone to attention with loud and lusty guitar, ripping off three choruses of 12-bar blues before singing “Weepin’ and Moanin’.” One might be forgiven for seeing Nashville as just too genteel a place, too calculated in its musical designs, to produce blues singers who truly evoke the Mississippi mud. But Mike, who’s earned his artistic freedom with hit songs for Trisha Yearwood and The Dixie Chicks, could cut with the best of them in Clarksdale or Chicago or Memphis. His cathedral-large guitar tone is as rich as any we’ve heard – a combo of vintage gear, a heavy picking hand and a guitar tuned down two steps. When he goes low, it’s low. He played mostly fretted solos, but his slide is always on his left finger, ready to carve off a slice or two at any moment. On his set closer “If You Think It’s Hot Here,” the title track off his new album, he broke traditional blues form and leaned more on a pop/rock melody that was enhanced by a intense slide solo. We must salute Kevin McKendree’s keyboard playing, which got especially nuanced on the quieter stretches of “Unseen Eye.” And the rhythm section of Michael Rhodes on bass and drummer Pat O’Connor offered a clinic in time, taste and combustion.

Read the review of the full show at: MCR 7.22.15
Mike Hendersontag:www.mikehenderson.com,2005:Post/37858482015-07-21T21:49:34-05:002017-01-16T08:26:22-06:00READ ABOUT MUSIC CITY ROOTS SHOW on 7/22/15
JOIN MIKE TOMORROW @ MUSIC CITY ROOTS

read about the upcoming show...
OLD MASTERS 7.22.15
Posted July 19, 2015 by Craig Havighurst

...Our other old master HAS played MCR before but in his role as bandleader and songwriter for the first generation of the Steeldrivers. There, Mike Henderson played mandolin and some dobro and was in every way awesome. But pare him down to his primal essence and he’s a blues man and a guitar player as real and gritty as they come. He’s a native of Missouri who came to town in 1985 with a Blind Pig Records release under his belt. Over time, he made the most of Music City’s diversity, becoming a widely respected and wide-ranging musician. He wrote songs for rock and country stars and played his guitar in all kinds of live and studio settings, including a world tour in the band of Mark Knopfler. He helped found Dead Reckoning Records, an early exemplar of today’s wave of indie music companies and deep roots artistry. And while he’s not still involved with the Steeldrivers, that experiment kickstarted one of the most inspiring and exciting bluegrass-meets-soul bands going. Meanwhile and all along, Mike held down the stage at the Bluebird Café on Monday nights. Famous for its hushed reverence for songcraft, the Mike Henderson Band gave the Bird its deep south crossroads credibility with tightly wound, always melodic and rocking blues. He’s made several fine albums of his own music, but the new disc If You Think It’s Hot Here is just explosively great. His guitar tone and his bold voice are like mighty oak trees, planted deep in the Earth, spreading a pleasant shade.Mike Hendersontag:www.mikehenderson.com,2005:Post/37462482015-05-14T21:10:00-05:002015-07-21T22:34:06-05:00Review on the 13th Annual Blues Festival GuideRenowned musician, singer-songwriter Mike Henderson has come full circle with this long awaited CD, If You Think It’s Hot Here on EllerSoul Records, and the return to his blue’s rockin’ roots.Mike Hendersontag:www.mikehenderson.com,2005:Post/37462492015-05-10T17:10:00-05:002022-02-10T15:33:02-06:00Mike Henderson marks 25 years of blues at Bluebird Cafe
Mike Henderson has been playing blues music at the Bluebird Café nearly every Monday night for the last 25 years, but his next show is extra special: he and his eponymous band are celebrating the release of their new album, “If You Think It’s Hot Here…”

This CD has been out since March 24, but it arrived in early April at my place. Mike Henderson (lead vocals, guitar and harmonica), Kevin McKendree (excellent piano and B-3), Michael Rhodes (bass) and Pat O'Connor (drums) recorded the album with a few special guests (guitarist Don Underwood and background vocalists Chris Stapleton and Morgane Stapleton) at Franklin, Tenn.'s The Rock House.

A rip-roaring version of Carl Perkins' "Matchbox," a "Memphis"-flavored cover of "Send You Back to Georgia," the gospel-tinged title song, a powerful take on Muddy's "Mean Red Spider" and a positively nifty closing instrumental called "Rock House Blues" are my current favorites; but nearly every song has something to recommend it.

Blues and rockin' piano fans will dig this album.
Mike Hendersontag:www.mikehenderson.com,2005:Post/37462542015-05-04T21:30:00-05:002015-06-17T21:29:26-05:00Twelve Bar Rag - Suncoast Blues SocietyThe three-time Grammy nominee has recorded with some of the most prominent talents in Blues, Country and Rock and played on Mark Knopfler’s world tour in 2000 – 2001. After taking time off to raise a family, he's back with a vengeance on If You Think It's Hot Here . . . (EllerSoul ***1/2).
With a big assist from producer Kevin McKendree on piano and organ, Henderson rips through blues numbers by Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Hound Dog Taylor, among others, with fierce intensity and shows he's as dynamic a singer as he is a player. The four originals, especially the change-of-pace title song, a smoldering soul/gospel ballad, make you wish Henderson had written more himself."Mike Hendersontag:www.mikehenderson.com,2005:Post/36624302015-04-16T21:26:43-05:002022-04-14T06:54:06-05:00Bacon Blues Review Back in the day's of the legendary Coyote Club in Wichita Kansas, I stumbled upon the Belairs. There was a man on guitar from Missouri named Mike Henderson who caught my attention. Henderson would move on to Nashville and during the next 30 + years became a three time Grammy nominee and multi-platinum songwriter and musician for a long list of artists; Mark Knopfler, Albert King, Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Lang, Guy Clark, John Hiatt, Sting, Martina McBride to name just a few. His records have included Americana, Blues and Bluegrass (critically acclaimed bluegrass band, The SteelDrivers). He stopped playing for a period to raise a family & songwriting. Kids grew up and now, Henderson has returned a new band and a new CD, "If You Think It's Hot Here...", which has quickly become my favorite album of the year! If you like your Blues flavored with superb slide guitar, Mighty fine keyboards, laid back harp and slow drawl of vocals, then you will fall in love with album as I have. I have chosen to not review each tune but ask you to get it for yourself, spend some time smiling and foot tapping, listening.
~Randy Crump, Host of Bacon Blues on Baconrock.com.Mike Hendersontag:www.mikehenderson.com,2005:Post/36625802015-04-14T21:55:00-05:002015-04-16T21:52:56-05:00Blues Magazine reviewMike Henderson lives like never before. Beginning just before sundown, the concert highlights the natural beauty of the amphitheater and focuses primarily on the catalogs of Howlin' Wolf, one of the most influential Chicago bluesmen of all time, known for his deep, scratchy voice, and Muddy Waters, considered the "father of modern Chicago blues" and a major inspiration for the British blues explosion of the 1960s, a genre that Bonamassa grew up with and that influences his own music to this day. A full performance will be dedicated to a selection of songs from each artist, starting with a tribute to Muddy Waters, dressing in formal Blues white as Muddy used to and showcasing archival footage of Muddy in this first section. The following segments are a tribute to Howlin' Wolf and then a set of songs from Bonamassa's own extensive catalog with three new songs from his new album, Different Shades of Blue.Mike Hendersontag:www.mikehenderson.com,2005:Post/34989892015-02-01T21:19:23-06:002021-11-29T09:33:25-06:00Bobby Keys and Me

Bobby Keys, Greg Wetzel & Me

It was a pick up gig with Bobby Bradford. I remember Willie Weeks was on the bass and I don't remember who else. Bobby played the hell out of "Honky Tonk" and brought down the house. After that I used to run into him all over town - he loved to jam. He "needed" to play like most good players. All the practicing by yourself in the world isn't worth a damn if you don't have a good sense of bandmanship and Bobby was eat up with that, When to play, what to play, and what to not play, he knew, and that's why he was always welcome everywhere. Music brought him joy and it was contagious. I can't remember a bad night when Bobby was on the bandstand. What a fine gentleman.

I never heard Bobby mention the Rolling Stones except one time. It was another pick up gig of all places the Station Inn, a bluegrass venue that's older than dirt. Someone had told this not-so-young lady that Bobby played with a famous band, and she walked up and stood by the side of the stage. When the song was over she asked rather loudly, "What band to do you play with?". Mr Keys politely replied, "the Rolling Stones". She said "Who?", "the Rolling Stones ma'am", "I don't know who that is" she said and went back to her seat. Bobby gave me a world-weary smile and stuck his horn back in his mouth. She must have thought he played with somebody really famous like the Monkees or the Captain and Tennille.

Me and some other guys had a regular gig for about six months at a little joint down on the Rock Block, close to the college and that's where this picture was taken. It was loose and fun and we had lots of friends come down and sit in. Bobby used to show up quite a bit and play his butt off but he never would take any money. I guess he didn't need any or thought we needed it more. One time he tried to pay me and Doug Cook something like 50 bucks apiece to help him set up his new stereo. I snuck it in the refrigerator when he wasn't looking. It was only fair.

So long Mr. Bobby. Our loss is Heaven's gain.

Check out the Rolling Stone magazine article about the late, great Bobby Keys

Mike Hendersontag:www.mikehenderson.com,2005:Post/34670072015-01-14T19:53:16-06:002018-09-20T05:10:25-05:00Mike on Skyville Live with Gladys Knight and Martina McBrideOriginally airing on January 14, 2015 at Skyvillelive.com, a live performance aired from Nashville starring Gladys Knight, Martina McBride, pop/r&b star Estelle and Mike helping out.
