Joining the singer-guitarist are former Stevie Ray Vaughan keyboardist Reese Wynans and two Nashville session pros, drummer John Gardner and bassist Glen Worf. The arrangements are neither too polite nor too self-indulgent but instead relight the original flame inside old blues standards by J.B. Hutto, Hound Dog Taylor, and Otis Spann. This album should shatter every stereotype about Nashville musicians. --Geoffrey Himes

First Blood harks back to the glory days of the '60s blues-rock boom -- Mike Henderson and the Bluebloods' gritty sound is far from original, but years on the Nashville bar band circuit have honed their skills to a razor-sharp point, and the record is refreshingly raw and direct, distinguished by rock-solid musicianship. ~ Jason Ankeny Entertainment Weekly

"It's not often that a blues musician comes along and speaks with a distinctive and eloquent musical vocabulary, but when they do the effect can be invigorating.... conjures up grainy black-and-white images of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Winter and Albert Collins." ~JazzTimes

Reckless

The SteelDrivers

The Steeldrivers may play traditional bluegrass, but they do it with a style that's informed by outlaw country and rock & roll attitude. Mike Henderson, who plays mandolin, resophonic guitar, and harmonica and also co-writes the majority of the band's original tunes, was one of the founders of the Dead Reckoning label, an alt-country label that released some of the best non-Nashville country albums of the ‘90s. That maverick approach is evident in the sounds The Steeldrivers generate here. The tempos on Reckless are more varied than those on their self-titled debut, but even the slower tracks pack the big emotional punch that bluegrass fans love, the kind of feeling that used to make country music dangerous.

Frustrated by the over-commercialization of Nashville's music, six singer/songwriters joined together to launch an independent record label, Dead Reckoning, and a band, the Dead Reckoners. Taking turns in the spotlight and accompanying others, the all-star group brought a back-to-the-roots approach to a mixture of rock-, country-, and blues-influenced tunes. While they mostly furnished accompaniment on albums by labelmates, the full band joined together to record a live album, A Night of Reckoning, in 1996 featuring Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch, Mike Henderson, Tammy Rogers and Harry Stinson
